U.S. Supreme Court – Inter-state Aquifers

Starting in 2005 and ending in 2021, a lawsuit was brought by the State of Mississippi against three parties: the State of Tennessee, the City of Memphis, and Memphis Light, Gas & Water, claiming that groundwater from the State of Mississippi was being unlawfully taken by the defendants.  This case was heard before the U.S. Supreme Court, who made their final ruling in Nov. 2021, in favor of the defendants. The outcome from this case not only impacted the local groundwater system, but set a precedence for inter-state aquifer systems throughout the Country.  Materials pertaining to this case are provided and should be cited accordingly.
